Monolith Series
Rodrigo Bravo
Chilean volcanic stone sculptures
DESCRIPTION
Conceptually, each piece in the series is developed through technical and formal experimentation. Much like sculpture, these objects go beyond a purely practical or functional purpose, embracing an artistic and emotional commitment that invites open interpretation of their use. At the same time, the series proposes a paradigm shift by reducing and transforming the sculptural scale—typically associated with architecture and public spaces—into a more domestic, object-based context.
Found only in Chile, Combarbalita is a volcanic stone over 80 million years old. It is characterized by a distinctive marbled texture and a rich color palette, with its use dating back to pre-Columbian civilizations. This stone is found in northern Chile, near the town of Combarbalá in the Coquimbo Region. The unique coloring of Combarbalita—ranging from reddish and pink-brown to white and turquoise-green—results from varying amounts of hematite, kaolinite, and other minerals.
Combarbalita’s appeal lies in its varied coloration, smooth texture, and the singular character each piece acquires from its mineral composition and volcanic origin.
